After a brief pause, she nodded. Taking his offered hand into hers, Angel's smile reappeared. "A dollar fifty? That seems reasonable. So then let's go buy it for you, honey," she said, before leading him in the direction of the cashier.

Once there, she quickly glanced the cashier over. He didn't seem too friendly with his beady brown eyes looking at them with disgust and scorn. Well, actually, he was glaring at her and looking as though he'd rather be anywhere but where he was at the moment. To avoid his stare but holding her head up high in the process, Angel put her unoccupied hand into her jacket pocket. Fingering the money, she pulled it out. She handed the needed amount to Collins and shoved the rest back into her jacket. The cashier was still staring at her in a way that made her want to leave and question herself. Squirming slightly under the look, Angel turned to bury her head into Collins' shoulder. She should be used to these kinds of looks by now and she was, but they still hurt.

The way the cashier was looking at his girl made Collins want to fly right over the counter and take out his teeth, but he was no fighter. Instead he locked eyes with the man and used his free hand to gently caress the back of Angel's neck. "You got a problem man?" he asked, trying to keep things polite.

The cashier didn't respond, though his gaze became more assuming and disgusted. A cough sounded and a mutter of "faggots" escaped him, as he continued to stare.

Angel squeezed her eyes shut, burying her head even deeper into Collins' shoulder. A short moment passed before she hesitantly pulled away and looked at him. "Collins... It's all right. Just pay for the book and we can go," she said, her voice soft. With another cough from the cashier, Angel retreated back to Collins' shoulder, squeezing his hand that still held hers tightly.

"No," he replied softly, leaning his head against hers. "Don't think so baby." He took the book out from under his arm where he'd put it while he comforted Angel and put it down on the counter. "S'pose you like ruining people's nights?" he asked, his eyes locking with the other man's again.

The man snorted. He had an almost mocking grin on his lips, while his eyes met with Collins'. Mumbling something incoherent under his breath, he glanced down at the book that had been placed on the counter. Turning his beady gaze back to Collins, then over to Angel, he smirked lazily with a small chuckle. "Maybe I do. What's it to ya, fag?"

"Collins, please." Angel quietly begged. As much as she would like to see this cashier get what was coming to him, she didn't want attention drawn to them. She hated fighting, plain and simple. An argument could lead to violence. But just raised voices were bad enough.

"S'ok baby," Collins soothed, kissing Angel's cheek gently without taking his gaze from the other man. "This may seem like a very little sale you've just lost," he said, indicating the book on the counter. "But I'm a professor at NYU and I have access to the entire campus' internet. First thing returning students will get when they come back this semester's gonna be an email detailing this entire exchange. Think your illustrious business can handle a hit like that? Maybe the kids'll ignore it, maybe some of them will still come here to buy their text books. Maybe not. You've got about three weeks to worry about it." He turned back to Angel and kissed her again. "C'mon babe, it suddenly stinks in here. Let's get outta here." He released her hand and slipped his arm around her waist, leading her back onto the street.

Angel pulled her head away from his shoulder to watch him as he spoke. Smiling lightly, she glanced at the cashier. The man stood there in a stunned silence, the smirk gone from his lips and replaced by a frown. Angel's smile became a bit wider as Collins' arm moved around her waist. She let him lead her back outside, never once looking back.

Once back on the street, she turned her head to look up at him. "I'm sorry, honey. I really wanted to get you that book." As she spoke, her slight smile slipped from her lips. Some people were just so judging.

"I'll get it someplace else," Collins told her, smiling gently at her. "Think I want to give an asshole like that even one penny of our money? We ain't got much, but at least we got pride," he said. "Ain't no book . . .ain't nothing worth the way that man was making you feel in there. I won't start fights, but I'm not gonna allow anyone to talk to my girl that way ever. You deserve the world, baby girl. And I wish I could give to you. Least I can do is protect you."

Angel smiled almost shyly, looking up at him with her big brown eyes. "Thank you. That means a lot," she said. Tilting her head back a bit, she leaned up to kiss him. "You still wanna shop? I'm not sure if I'm in the mood for it anymore," she asked before kissing him again. "I love you, Collins," she said, smiling against his lips.

"Love you too," he replied, putting his hand on her cheek and pulling her towards him for a deeper kiss. "Let's go home," he agreed as he took her hand and led her back in the direction of their apartment.

She willingly complied as he deepened the kiss. After it ended, Angel nodded her agreement on his suggestion. "Yes, let's." With their fingers laced together, she followed him in the direction of their apartment, letting him lead her.
